ONE BOY'S JOURNEY TO THE ABYSS
Adam is a gifted high school student who doesn't quite fit in with the regular crowd. When he's diagnosed with a mental disorder and put on a treatment of psychiatric medications, his life spirals terribly out of control.
Based on real world events, Disorder illustrates a common fate many children meet when they enter the mental health system. The questionable diagnoses’ handed down by medical experts. The difficult and confusing choices parents must make. And, as in some extreme cases, the unthinkable outcomes that can result.
DIRECTOR'S STATEMENT
In my lifetime, I’ve watched a bizarre phenomena evolve in our society -- The unexplainable epidemic of mental illness, most notably among our children. Since 1987, mental illness diagnoses’ in children have multiplied 40 times. And interestingly, psychiatric drug prescriptions multiplied by the same amount. So has the steady increase in suicides, insanity and senseless acts of violence. It’s a phenomenon that defies logic. As a filmmaker my goal was to explore this enigma and shine a light on a dark corner of this burning topic, more relevant now than ever before.
After consulting numerous experts on mental health treatment. Absorbing personal accounts from family members and victims of mental illness, a picture began to emerge. That of a well-intentioned but flawed mental health industry which works in strange, inexplicable ways. Disorder is based on real life events and deep research into a modern day epidemic that affects us all. A story of one boy’s experience and the shocking outcome that happens far more than anyone wants to admit.
